Before founding MyAirbags, Vitaly Sandyrev purchased vehicles at auction, repaired them, and sold them for profit. It was a side business built around the same calculation every rebuilder makes:

And after the work is complete, will there still be enough margin to make the project worthwhile?
At the same time, Vitaly was working as a software developer and software engineer. That combination—hands-on rebuilding and technical problem-solving—shaped the company that MyAirbags would become.
The cost that could change the entire deal
Collision vehicles often carried a major financial warning: deployed airbags.
Once an airbag deployed, the repair estimate could grow rapidly. The visible airbags were only part of the system. The airbag control module could contain crash data. Seat belts could lock or activate their pretensioners. Connector plugs could melt. Other safety components could deploy depending on the vehicle.
The conventional answer was often replacement: replace the module, replace complete assemblies, order expensive parts, wait for availability, and accept the dealership-level cost.
For a rebuilder, those costs could turn a promising auction purchase into a losing project.
Vitaly saw the problem from the customer’s side because he was the customer. He was not trying to invent a marketing category. He was trying to complete a rebuild correctly while protecting the economics of the vehicle.
A software engineer’s approach to a hardware problem
Software development teaches a particular way of thinking. A large problem is broken into smaller components. The cause is separated from the symptom. Assumptions are tested. The goal is not to replace an entire system because one part of it failed; the goal is to understand what happened and correct the actual problem.
That same logic applied to the airbag control module.
After a qualifying collision, the module may store crash data and hard codes. The original module is already matched to the vehicle. If an eligible module can be professionally reset and returned, the customer may avoid the cost and additional coding complications of sourcing a replacement.
That practical solution became the foundation of MyAirbags in 2006.
Built around the rebuilder’s complete job
The company could have remained focused on a single service. But customers kept revealing the next problem.
A reset module did not solve a deployed seat belt pretensioner. A repaired seat belt did not solve a fired battery disconnect. A new driver airbag did not require an entire clock spring replacement when only the end connector had melted. A vehicle with an active headrest or collapsible steering column component created another specialized challenge.
MyAirbags continued expanding because the customer needed a more complete path through the post-collision SRS process.
That progression reflects a simple principle:
> Do not build services around what is easiest to sell. Build them around what the customer is actually trying to finish.
For rebuilders and car flippers, the job is not “buy one module reset.” The job is to restore the vehicle, control the budget, understand the remaining faults, and get the project back on track.
Helping people see opportunity where others see risk
For many years, deployed airbags made auction buyers nervous. The vehicle could be dismissed before anyone calculated the real repair path.
MyAirbags began teaching customers not to treat every blown-airbag vehicle as automatically untouchable. That does not mean every collision vehicle is a good purchase. Structural damage, title rules, parts availability, labor, hidden faults, and vehicle value still matter.
It means the buyer should replace fear with a complete estimate.
When a rebuilder understands the airbags, seat belts, module, connectors, sensors, and other crash-activated components, the vehicle can be evaluated on facts. Sometimes the correct answer is to walk away. Other times, the knowledge creates an opportunity because less-informed buyers have already left the lane.
The mission has stayed practical
MyAirbags has grown since 2006, but the core idea remains close to the original rebuild:

The company was built by someone who knew what it felt like to stand beside a damaged auction vehicle and ask, “Can this be rebuilt correctly—and can the numbers still work?”
