How To: Mercedes Benz Sprinter Airbag Module Removal

Sprinter Airbag Module removal involves taking apart some of the floor and lower dash. The steps provide proper access to the battery as well as the SRS module itself. Sprinter vans are all about cargo capacity and/or passenger seating. To allow for as much interior volume as possible, the designers pushed all of the electronics and mechanicals as far forward as possible. That means you'll be working at the very front of the interior compartment and under the floorboards.

WARNING: Disconnect the Battery Before Airbag Module Removal

Before accessing the airbag module, it is necessary to disconnect the battery and wait. The battery is located under the floorboard just in front of the driver's seat. You'll need to remove the floor mats as well as the metal floor that covers the battery. Disconnect both battery cables and wait at least 15 minutes to allow any residual electrical charge in the system to dissipate. This step is crucial to ensure safety.

Accessing the Airbag Module

With the battery disconnected, it's time to remove the passenger-side floorboard and spare tire tools. We like to remove the cupholders for better visibility. Finally, it's time to take apart the AC ducts.  At this point, you should have enough access to disconnect the airbag module connectors and the mounting hardware.  Be sure to disconnect the connectors BEFORE you remove the hardware. The module should be completely powered down and disconnected before handling or removal. This is because airbag modules are designed to sense if the vehicle has flipped over or rotated beyond a certain angle.

Airbag Module Reset Service

Once the airbag module is removed, pack it carefully along with any other deployed SRS components such as seatbelt pretensioners, active actuators, and steering column sensors. You'll save a lot of time by having all of these components serviced at the same time.
