Beyond Airbags and Seat Belts: The SRS Components That Can Change a Rebuild Budget

A post-collision estimate can look complete and still be missing several of the parts most likely to delay the rebuild.

The airbags are listed. The dashboard is included. The seat belts and airbag control module are accounted for. Then the vehicle is assembled, scanned, and a new set of faults appears: an active headrest deployment, a battery safety terminal, a steering column component, an active hood actuator, a rollover protection device, or a damaged SRS connector.

These are not unusual surprises on modern vehicles. They are evidence that the Supplemental Restraint System has expanded beyond the components most people associate with the word “airbag.”

Rebuilders who know what to look for can estimate earlier, order or send parts sooner, and protect the schedule and margin of the project.

Start with the complete event—not one warning code

A collision can produce several types of information:

- Physical deployment or deformation
- Stored crash data
- Circuit faults
- Lost communication
- Low- or high-resistance faults
- Component configuration errors
- Battery disconnect activation
- Occupant classification or seat-related faults
- Pedestrian-protection activation
- Rollover system activation

The scan report is important, but it should be combined with a physical inspection and vehicle-specific service information. A code may point to a circuit rather than prove the exact failed part. A visibly deployed component may also require related trim, brackets, fasteners, wiring, or initialization work.

Active head restraints

Some vehicles use active head restraints designed to move forward during certain rear impacts to help reduce the distance between the occupant’s head and the restraint.

After activation, the headrest may sit forward, show a visible gap, fail to lock back into position, or set a restraint-system fault. Replacement can involve an expensive headrest or seat component, especially when the interior color and trim must match.

Collapsible steering column components

A steering column is designed to manage energy and reduce occupant injury risk during a collision. Some vehicles use sensors, pyrotechnic elements, or other components that can activate or record a fault after impact.

The initial recommendation may be replacement of the complete steering column. On supported applications, the failed crash-related component may have a more targeted repair path.

This is a category where accurate identification is critical. Steering angle sensors, electronic column locks, torque sensors, collapse sensors, and mechanical damage are not the same problem. Provide the part number, scan codes, photos, and collision details before assuming a service applies.

Active hood actuators

Certain pedestrian-protection systems use pyrotechnic actuators to raise the rear of the hood during an impact event. The extra clearance is intended to help manage the space between the hood and harder structures beneath it.

When activated, the vehicle may show a raised hood, fired hinges or actuators, warning messages, and stored faults. The complete repair can involve actuators, hinges, sensors, hood alignment, body damage, and system initialization.

Supported active hood actuators may be eligible for specialized repair, but the surrounding mechanical and electronic system must still be inspected and restored.

Deployable rollover bars

Convertibles and some open-top vehicles use deployable rollover protection. Bars may rise from behind the seats during a detected rollover or severe event.

Never force a deployed rollover system down or attempt to defeat the related circuits. The exact mechanism and service procedure vary by vehicle.

Occupant and seat-related modules

Passenger occupancy systems help the vehicle determine whether and how the passenger airbag should operate. Depending on the vehicle, the system can include a seat mat, weight sensor, occupant classification module, seat control unit, wiring, and calibration.

Collision work, seat replacement, water intrusion, connector damage, or incompatible parts can create faults that are not solved by resetting the main airbag module.

Some occupant modules may be reset or serviced, while other conditions require sensor replacement, seat calibration, or OEM diagnostic procedures.

Airbag and seat belt connector plugs

A melted driver-airbag plug, damaged seat belt connector, or broken locking tab may appear small compared with the rest of the collision damage, but it can stop the entire SRS repair.

The correct connector may allow the technician to preserve a good clock spring, harness section, or seat belt assembly. The wrong connector or an improper splice can create resistance, intermittent faults, or a dangerous failure.

Use only the correct, supported connector and wiring method. Never install a resistor or bypass to simulate a functioning component.

Battery cable and pyro-fuse devices

Crash-activated battery disconnects may be called pyro fuses, battery safety terminals, battery cable igniters, or pyrotechnic disconnects. They can create a no-start condition or other electrical symptoms even when parts of the vehicle still have power.

Some low-voltage cable assemblies may be eligible for repair. High-voltage hybrid and EV systems require separate training, equipment, and procedures and should never be treated as an ordinary cable repair.

Build the estimate in layers

A stronger post-collision estimate includes four layers:

1. Visible deployment: airbags, trim, glass, headliner, dash, seat, and exterior damage.
2. Restraint hardware: seat belts, buckles, pretensioners, active headrests, rollover systems, hood actuators, and connectors.
3. Control and electrical: airbag module, occupant modules, sensors, wiring, battery disconnects, coding, and calibration.
4. Verification: scan, physical inspection, manufacturer procedures, post-repair checks, and documentation.
