A parts diagram uses pyrotechnic disconnect. An electric vehicle service manual may call the component a high-voltage pyrotechnic fuse.
The terms sound different enough to describe unrelated parts.
Often, they refer to the same general safety concept: a crash- or fault-activated device designed to interrupt electrical current quickly. But the exact construction, voltage, location, function, and repair path can vary significantly by vehicle.
That is why identification matters.
What the device is designed to do
During a serious collision or electrical fault, uncontrolled current can increase the risk of fire, short circuits, arcing, or electric shock. Some vehicles use a pyrotechnic device that receives a command from the airbag control unit, battery management system, or another controller.
A small pyrotechnic charge moves a cutting element or piston that physically opens the electrical path. Depending on the vehicle, the device may disconnect a starter or alternator circuit, isolate selected 12-volt loads, or separate a high-voltage battery from the rest of an electric or hybrid vehicle.
Once activated, the device is not simply reset with a scan tool. The physical disconnect must be properly repaired or replaced according to the design and applicable procedure.

The following terms may appear in listings, scan reports, service information, and customer conversations:

These names should not be treated as perfectly interchangeable. “BST” is strongly associated with certain BMW applications, while other manufacturers use their own terminology. A conventional 12-volt positive battery cable device is not the same service problem as a high-voltage disconnect inside an EV battery pack.
Why the vehicle may have electrical power—but still have a fired device
Some designs disconnect only selected high-current circuits while leaving other vehicle functions powered. That can create confusing symptoms after a crash:
- Interior lights or accessories work, but the engine will not crank
- The starter circuit is open
- The alternator or charging circuit is isolated
- Multiple warning messages appear
- The SRS module stores a battery disconnect deployment code
- A hybrid or electric vehicle reports high-voltage isolation or contactor faults
- The positive cable shows a visible fired section or resistance where continuity should exist
A no-start condition after a collision should not be diagnosed by replacing the battery automatically. The full electrical and SRS system must be scanned and inspected.
Why replacement can become expensive
In some vehicles, the pyrotechnic element is integrated into a long positive battery cable assembly. The replacement quote may include the complete cable, distribution block, terminals, routing labor, trim removal, and manufacturer-specific programming or initialization steps.
